"Unless we are willing to settle down into a world that is our prison, we must be ready to move beyond Earth." -Isaac Asimov
BEYOND~*~ A Science Fiction RP Adventure ~*~OOC Discussion / Character Application ThreadGM: NathanielCoranTo participate in BEYOND, create a character on this thread. Once your character is accepted, join in on the In-Character Roleplay thread
The year is 2645. The people of Earth have long ago put aside their differences in order to extend the reach of mankind far beyond the limits of their homeworld. United Humanity, as the humans who seek to settle the endless expanse of space call themselves, is a coalition of everything humanity has done right in order to grow infinitely as a species.Having colonised the worlds of their Solar System to one day grow as grand as the Earth itself, mankind sought further goals in the infinity that space travel presents to them. For this purpose, a grand fleet was created, travelling out like antennae into the void, spreading the glory of humanity farther than any man could dream. The PTC Wayward Spear is one of the many smaller cruisers that makes up this grand fleet. Captained by the decorated Cpt. Davinter Ecellos, the Spear has been in operation for the relatively short time of five years. Hosting a crew of only a few dozen capable men and women, the cruiser's duty is to travel beyond human knowledge, to answer that question which humanity has pondered since it first looked to the sky: 'What is out there?'.
BEYOND is a science fiction RP set in the semi-distant future, a time where humanity has united under one banner and seeks to sate their thirst for knowledge among the stars. In BEYOND, members will portray crew members aboard one of the many star cruisers that mankind is using to explore space: The PTC Wayward Spear. The Spear's duty, as described in the narrative above, is to explore regions of space that mankind has not yet reached, hoping to answer some of the questions that humanity has been asking for centuries. In the process the crew will find themselves involved in many adventures, all revolved around space travel and the thirst for exploration. Be it the charting of an unexplored nebula cluster or a delivery of much needed medical supplies, the Spear traverses the stars to do its part in making the universe a better place for humankind.
Before you can launch yourself into the world of BEYOND, you will need a character through which to participate. Each player character is a unique being with their own set of occupational skills, but all are aligned in their service to the Wayward Spear. To create a character for BEYOND, please fill out the application template below (don't feel too obliged to go into great detail, fill in what's necessary and if I think you need to add anything after that I'll let you know ): Name:Age:Gender:Occupation (ie. What your character does on board the Spear):Physical Description:Personality Description:Backstory:If you need any clarification on how to fill the template out, don't hesitate to ask!
Unfortunately, in order for the format to work, we're going to need a few rules in place. I'll try not to be too much of a stickler, but when push comes to shove things need to be orderly or else the RP just won't be any fun. 1. Be polite and respectful. It's not hard guys, come on. 2. Follow the forum rules, or else I will get the admin belt out. 3. No powergaming or god-modding. If you don't know what this means: Urban Dictionary Definition
4. Don't go plagiarising. I don't want to see any Lieutenant Specks or Ham Zolos. Let's get original fellas.
5. The course of the Spear is determined by GM except in special circumstances. If you want to suggest a location, let me know and we can talk about it.
6. Random events will be determined by a random number generation system, in order to keep the RP exciting. See the first reply in this thread for an explanation of how this system works.
7. Alien races, although a possibility, have not been discovered by humanity as of yet in BEYOND. As a result, all player characters should be human (unless the RP eventually introduces other sentient species, which it very well may).
8. Please no deus ex machina characters or 'Mary Sue's. I don't want to see any 'chosen ones', any child prodigies, any 'inhumanly impressive at this one thing' characters. BEYOND will be far more interesting when everybody sits on a level playing field (and yes, that includes Captain Ecellos as well).
9. Obligatory 'Have fun!' rule.
Character List:Davinter Ecellos - Nathaniel Coran - Captain Steve Pearson - Arbor117 - Helmsman Malcom DeSilva - t00bz - Gunner Simon Krieg - Adam - Ground Leader Xena Bane - Jaminx - Engineer Ezekiel Silos - iCaramelBird - Medic/Quartermaster Elijah Finch - AlexJ - Chief Researcher Jonathan Zark - LHudson - Fitness Advisor Lisa Fitzgerald - SpacemanFromMars - Planetary Geopgrapher Martin Brooks - Zircon - Scout
Thanks for taking the time to read about BEYOND! I hope to see plenty of you joining the crew!

The system I'll be using to determine random events is fairly simple: whenever we hit a point where I feel the plot needs to get going, I'll get myself a randomly generated number from 1 to 50 to determine what will happen next, with each of those numbers referring to an event cue on a list that I will be keeping private. What this will mean is that not even I will know what direction the story will take, and it will allow for more random and (hopefully) exciting scenarios for your characters to face.
Of course, the whole RP won't be entirely determined by the RNG system; a few points will be kept quiet (especially the very beginning) to allow for internal character interaction and development without forcing you to keep them busy. In general, I'll let you guys operate freely until I feel things have become stale, at which point the RNG will be back again.

Bringing it back, eh?
Name: Steve Pearson
Age: 35
Gender: Male
Occupation: Helmsman/ Pilot
Physical Description: Tall, standing a little over 6'3, Steve is fit and healthy and does his best to stay at the top of his physical game, resulting in a man well suited for the more physical vigours of star travel. His broad physique matches his strong jaw and solid face, which is framed by his trademark mustache that he has sported since his youth. His soft blond hair has been cut short to keep it out of his eyes at all times, a tradition he took up when he took on the job of star travel. He tends to be found wearing a battered brown jacket over his standard issue uniform, a trait he has been reprimanded for several times before.
Personality Description: Steve has something of a reputation as a hotshot daredevil, never fearing danger and always willing to take a risk for a better outcome. There is some truth in this, as Steve has never been one to back down from a challenge, and is more than wiling to risk his own life for others, but there is a lot more to him than that. Cheerful and jovial, he's a caring sort who is loyal to his friend and comrades until any limit (these are often one and the same, if he has any say in it). No engineer, and certainly no scientist, he's content with the comparatively simple job of driving the space bus. He is justifiably confident in his abilities, knowing where his limits are and always striving to exceed them, he's a damn fine pilot who will happily fly into the jaws of hell, if only to say he had done so and come out alive.
Backstory: For Steve, there never was anything as exciting as the idea of starships. Even as a kid, the idea of guiding a sleek, high-tech vessel into the depths of the void was irresistible. There were new worlds to be discovered, new life to be examined, and new phenomena to be witnessed. Despite growing up on a backwater colony, where ambition went to retire and live a life of farming, he never looked away from his dream. There simply wasn't any option.
It took a lot of work to get the young daydreamer into a pilot's academy, but Steve never gave up (nor did his supportive family ever try to hold him back). Leaving his crop-covered home-world behind, he took off to the stars, and he hasn't looked back in the many years since. His flourished, and graduated with a strong record that set him in well for a commission into the exploratory fleet, and managed to build a reputation for his talent, and his demeanor.
Now assigned to the Wayward Spear, Steve is ready to serve. Even as experienced as he is, the wanderlust remains in his heart, and he is ready for the next great adventure that comes into his viewscreen. So much remains to be discovered and experienced, and nothing excites him more than knowing that his brave frontier will be discovered with him at the helm, as the one who truly guides the ship into whatever wonders that it beholds. That is his privilege, and for that, he could not be more delighted.

Name: Malcolm DeSilva Age:33 Gender: Male Occupation (ie. What your character does on board the Spear): Gunner - Malcolm's former experience as a smuggler allowed him to get to know ships and guns quite well. He can maintain the ship's weapon systems and also incorporate new materials and upgrades if possible. In battle, particularly with other ships, DeSilva is in control of the ship's weapons and directs the weapon systems where to fire. Aside from maintenance and usage of the ship weapons, he also ensures that suits and weapons used by the ground teams are in order and can also modify them. While technically not legal, laws aren't at the top of Malcolm's priorities.
Physical Description: Malcolm is dark-skinned and is of average height, standing at 5'7", and is built solidly. His black hair is cut short and he usually sports the stubble of a goatee and mustache, which often leads to some complaints by his superiors in his new, legal lifestyle. He wears the issued uniform, though he usually rolls up the sleeves for comfort and so he can work with the mechanical systems of the ships should there be issues with the weapons.
Personality Description: Malcolm is a man who works on his own accord, saying what's on his mind and if he disagrees with what goes on on the ships he works on. That said, he is fairly agreeable and when in normal situations, is a fine person with his rough, but laid-back attitude. However, in more serious situations, his personality remains the same because he is largely desensitized to them, and can come off as rather rude and blunt.
Backstory: Malcolm is from earth, growing up in the slums of one of the many overpopulated cities, and, similarly to many other children, he quickly fell in with a street gang, scrounging for food together and trying to get any money they could. He survived and eventually managed to join a crew of smugglers through his street connections, which at least got him away from the backstabbing life that the slums had evolved into. He stuck with the smugglers, sneaking weapons and various treasures from other planets right by United Humanity's law enforcement on a spaceship. He learned to enjoy the freedom space gave him, and while he secretly wished to pursue a more safe and legal lifestyle, he knew that he would be unable to pursue any work because of his criminal background, if he joined the military, he would be a mere pawn and meat shield for better soldiers. He remained in the smuggling business and learned all he could about the spaceships and what cargo they were carrying, especially if it was unique or rare.
He became a gunner for the crews he worked with, primarily defending the ships he was on from pirates or other smugglers who wanted to steal their cargo for themselves. DeSilva became quite experienced with weapons systems, learning the weakpoints of many different ships and how to effectively combat enemy crew. Unfortunately, after changing between crews a few times, the smugglers he was with were caught by law enforcement. However, DeSilva managed to escape unidentified by hacking the ship to not set off an alarm when escape pods were launched, and got away just as law enforcement was trying to get through the forward battery's doors to capture him, which he had locked and barricaded.
DeSilva returned to Earth with a fairly clean slate, he had shared fake credentials with the particular smugglers he had been caught with (a trick he had learned from his first captain) and was not worried about one of them tipping the law off. However, he had no idea what to do. He was able to live fairly well with the money he had from his smuggling job, but it was not going to be enough to support him for a prolonged amount of time. After short time, he began looking for another job, citing a vague "weapons experience" rather than a street gang and smuggling. From this, the sponsors of the Wayward Spear decided to interview him where he was able to show off his skills and was assigned to the cruiser.

Name: Simon Kreig Age: 28 Gender: M
Occupation: Ground Leader
Physical Description: 6 foot, Kreig is respectable but not intimidating in appearance, mildly muscular. From his time in service (imagine the Air Force in space) Kreig maintains great, proper posture and a stable stance. Kreig has dark, almost black, brown hair and green eyes, both indistinguishable from the other. He's clean-shaven, with an ivy league haircut. Kreig often wears a black, canvas jacket over a white tee and a green neckerchief with matching dark green cargo trousers as well as knee-high, black-and-white metal boots.
Personality Description: Kreig is something of a wise guy. He cracks jokes, quips and teases but when it comes down to it is incredibly loyal and incredibly focused on the task at hand. He's friendly and open-minded if not slightly off-putting and unapproachable due to alienating self-assurance. A lot of people get him wrong at first glance, finding him cocky and overconfident; which he is, though there are definitely other layers to him.
Backstory: Simon Kreig was born on a small city on Mars. He had an uneventful childhood, being born to boring parents in a boring city. But eventually when he was around seventeen he met a girl.
The two were immediately infatuated with each other and spent virtually every waking minute together; due to his boring life he made her his world. And all was good until her father; a United Humanity officer on Earth fell ill and she was forced to abandon her life on Mars to see her father on his deathbed 249 million miles away. This was the push he needed.
No longer satisfied with his meager, boring life Kreig enrolled in the Martian Space Command where he excelled as an incredible fighter pilot. After years of training; at around age 24, Kreig had achieved the rank of Squadron Leader. Unfortunately though, on a mission escorting a trade ship the party were attacked. Kreig lead his squadron to victory but in the onslaught his own fighter was hit. He ejected to safety to be picked up by the trade ship but not before being struck by shrapnel requiring his immediate surgery.
Kreig lost his right leg and eye that day. Luckily modern medicines could heal the scars on his face but they couldn't replace his leg and eye. From then on he was forbidden to serve as a fighter pilot, no longer passing medical exams due to having to use a prosthetic eye; the job was simply too specific. Instead, Kreig was welcomed aboard the very ship he had been escorting and began piloting the larger vessel on deliveries. It wasn't as exciting but he still got to visit other worlds, and they would actually let him pilot these ships due to their non-combat situations.
Kreig became a valuable asset to the company, accompanying them on extensive surface negotiations and bargains. Doing this Kreig became fluent in an amazing number of languages and dialects but the job still left him wanting more. Quickly he became bored of visiting the same locations over and over again and became unsatisfied with carrying out missions which essentially left him as a bus driver and travelling salesperson.
After spending two years with the company, Kreig met a man at a bar on Earth who began talking about the United Humanity corporation which Kreig remembered from the situation with his childhood sweetheart. The man, who was apparently a representative told him of a recent opening on the PTC Wayward Spear, an exploration ship. Kreig was dismayed to find the position of pilot already fulfilled but found an almost equally exciting role open that he more than qualified for...
During his time with the trade company Kreig had developed stellar communication and deduction skills on top of the combat-readiness and tracking skills he'd learnt in the MAS. This left him more than qualified to assume the position of Ground Leader, scouting out terrain and making contact with civilizations as well as leading others in open combat when necessary. He was not combat expert nor strategist but he was a leader.

Name: Dr Xena Bane
Age: 27
Gender: Female
Occupation: Engineer
Physical Description: Ginger frizzy hair is cut short the stray strands always held back with weird clips and head bands that are usually interspersed with pencils and other little tools of the trade. When working she tends to wear a jumpsuit emblazoned with the ships emblem, the sleeves rolled up a tool belt on her hip, a pair of gloves always looking as though it is about to fall out from the belts grasp. She is small in stature with rather a wiry frame good for dealing with fiddly problems the bigger engineers cannot reach. Her eyes a soft blue though most think them grey if they think of them at all as she keeps her gaze on her work.
Personality Description: Xena is rather quiet spending more time in her own head which gives her a rather distant look. She is not prone to large shows of emotion though is known to snap when she feels that someone is doing something she knows to be ineffective. Incredibly loyal to those she feels friends, but by her actions it is hard to tell she thinks of you this way until she comes to your defence.
Backstory: Xena always enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together as a child initially she started with bugs and frogs, before she started on larger prey her parents started her on clocks and engines feeling that oil was a better thing to be found coated in over blood.
Her parents were reasonably well off and paid for her to learn engineering at the best universities even though it took her a little while to learn how to plan projects instead of diving straight in and taking all apart before checking whether it was radioactive or not.
Xena spent a lot of time alone studying and though she was hands on with machines she found it hard to get hands on with people a small part of her dissecting them in her mind as she dissected the machines.
She received her Doctorate in Advanced Engineering two years ago she struggled for a year to find work at first looking for projects on the planet, picking up some work repairing different space vehicles and smaller planet based transports but finally being seduced by recruiters and a need to get out from under her parents feet and experience things outside academia. Signing up for the PTC Wayward Spear crew was the most nerve-wrecking and exciting thing she has done in her life.

Name: Ezekiel Silos
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Occupation (ie. What you character does on board the Spear): Medic and Quartermaster
Physical Description: Ezekiel Silos is thin, somewhat scrawny yet tries to keep to a healthy diet but doesn't find himself with the time to do much exercising in the way of work. Due to his dedication to his work he finds himself at a disadvantage physically and yet when it comes to focusing on tiny things and having precise dexterity, Ezekiel comes in handy. His somewhat small stature allows him to be quite agile when need be. He has fair skin and black short hair that is almost always covered under one of his caps, that he took with him on board. Ezekiel normally wears a dark blue leather jacket with a plain white shirt and dark cargo pants and trainers. This is normally his one and only outfit that he ever wears even in public, back home.
Personality Description: Ezekiel can be cold at times, giving it to people directly and he is not here to beat around the bush. Though he manages to hide his own feelings and insecurities well, they still glimmer through his façade, at times. Ezekiel does however, try his best not to be too cynical and sometimes optimistic in situations when he is around those he likes. However his personality and generally his demeanour tends to push people the wrong way, making him feel isolated at times. He never blames himself for it though, Ezekiel is too proud of his work as a medic to care much about anything else. At times, Ezekiel can be lost in his own bubble, far too busy day dreaming. Ezekiel does have a very profound interest in space or anything that is based on fantasy, the idea of exploring other worlds even if they spawn from one's imagination is profound to him. He also shares a love for philphilosophy. Ezekiel stays away from other topics like politics and cares more about the conversation than the people participating in it. He does have ounces of compassion and care for the others mainly stemming from his role of Quarter Master that he felt obligated to hold onto, believing no one else would. However, he still acts distant and cold, not willing to make any bonds of friendships and hates small-talk.
Backstory: Ezekiel was born being labelled as someone who was bound to fail in life. His parents loved him, and he had a regular childhood as ever. But it was during his pre-teen years that his grades were plummeting, he was no good at any art or sport, generally, movies didn't interest him. Ezekiel's parents had no idea what exactly was wrong with him, where his passion was going and this made Ezekiel, at times feel quite worthless. It wasn't until he found something that interested him, that sparked that passion in life; science. Though Ezekiel could only pull off some decent grades in science, it wasn't until high school where science seemed to get more exciting with experiments and more detail into subjects that interested him that Ezekiel found a love for science.
Ezekiel found himself to be the type of person that would never really make friends. Beforehand, when his grades were not that impressive, he was able to lose himself in social interaction. Yet his newfound love for science had seemed to take all that away from him. It is because of this that Ezekiel never tried to really be socially aware of others. Ezekiel does slightly sometimes like to imagine what his life would be like with friends. However, his affinity for science and in general fantasy seems to delude him into the idea that friends aren't needed in life, and thus he finds his passion in his work as opposed to with friends due to his experience with them. Ezekiel is still open to caring about others and showing compassion to them, but merely just doesn't like to socialize that much, even if he does sometimes miss it.
It was due to his studies in Physics that led him to later find a love for Mathematics. Ezekiel was skyrocketing to the top of his class, and he was soon finding himself later in his young adult life actually training to be an astronaut. And yet...something was wrong. Ezekiel still felt that same empty feeling beforehand. Sure he felt much better, he had nothing wrong mentally but something in his life felt missing. Either way, before he could even protest, he found himself ready to go on board Spear, ready for this next adventure, this new step in life.
Flaws: Absent-minded, isolating (due to his social behaviour), cynical, and physically weak (can't really fend for himself), he can only run. At times can be emotionally unstable.
Miscellaneous: Ezekiel is asexual, that is including aromantic. Despite feeling some need for some kind of friendship, Ezekiel never found himself ever willing to be with anyone romantically or even sexually, even before he started having a love for science.
Ezekiel is an extraordinary cook, he tends to make his own food as opposed to wait and sit with others to have the food served to them.
Ezekiel is adept at playing the violin but hasn't played for weeks. He debated about bringing his violin onto the ship, but decided against it, not feeling like he would have much time to himself to play it. He instead substituted his violin for his love of music, bringing his own personal smartphone the new 'Jones Lotus' onto the ship, where he can listen to music.
Ezekiel listens to a lot of different music but it mostly stems from classical to music from television shows, video games or other types of media. Ezekiel never tends to indulge himself into these same television shows or games often, and more or less just likes the music.
Ezekiel has things organised, in his own way. Things such as files on his phone are extremely organised and he has a certain aesthetic, meaning he will spend hours customising his phone and other things until they have the right appearance. However, real life documents and papers, as well as medical supplies are horribly dysfunctional, aside from the fact that Ezekiel can find almost any supply at a whims notice. As quartermaster, Ezekiel has wrestled with this real life common dysfunctional and has tried his best to get over it, at least when it comes to the ships' supplies.
Though Ezekiel isn't the most physically capable of defending himself, he is still an excellent runner due to most of his exercise being on the treadmill. As well as this back home he was surprisingly great at rock-climbing, his father went rock climbing with Ezekiel, realizing the importance of having Ezekiel stay somewhat healthy after his friends left him. Ezekiel also loves and misses hikes, with his father. They once went with his mother and younger sister and brother but only Ezekiel and his father could really handle it. It's mostly Ezekiel's diet that lets him down in terms of his health, but nonetheless, he is still competently agile and would hopefully, in his mind, be able to make a quick escape.
Ezekiel once had a horrific fear of heights, something that he had to conquer when his father started to encourage him to rock climb. Ever since then Ezekiel is still fearful but is comfortable with knowing that he can handle himself.
Ezekiel is a huge fan of fantasy, spending a lot of his time creating his own universes. He never desired to be a writer, knowing that it just isn't his passion and something that he would enjoy doing, he admits sometimes that even creating worlds gets dull and stressful, but he loves exploring the worlds of others and the genre of fantasy in general. He doesn't particularly share a liking to high fantasy, believing that elves, dwarves and other similar races and conventions have been done over and over again.
Ezekiel is both a trained diagnostician and a neurologist. He became an expert in both fields in order to get a general basis on what could be wrong with a patient, no matter what kind of illness. Neurology was just another aspect of medicine that interested Ezekiel and he decided rather than simply remain a diagnostician, it would be useful to become an expert in a certain field of medicine concerning certain body parts, afflictions, etc.

Name: Elijah Finch Age: 24 Gender: Male Occupation: Chief Scientific Researcher Aboard the PTC Wayward Spear, Eli is responsible for the study of worlds and any potential lifeform the crew come across. Above this, Eli can serve as an extra pair of hands in the engineering department, or the med bay, though he would much prefer to focus on his work: that is stationed within a cutting edge lab upon the ship.
Physical Description: 5’11 (creeping up on 6’0), with an average build and good posture, Eli is not a particularly interesting person to look at. His face is long, though fairly well defined, and his dark brown hair is messily pushed back, without the aid of gel or comb. Perhaps most notable are his big brown eyes, indicating a man who appreciates good sleep. His expressions typically switch from a seemingly content half-smile, to a thoughtful and focused frown.
Eli usually wears a combination of more casually suited vests, and a variety of t-shirts below. The most common of such being his white shirt with a light brown, almost tweed vest, he almost always wears a pair of jeans and brown shoes: the standard affair back home.
Personality Description: Despite whatever adversity Eli may face, he tries his hardest to remain lighthearted. He understands when he is given an amazing opportunity, and as such tends not to complain. This offers him a sense of wonder in new, undiscovered matters, as well as an appreciation of perhaps the smallest things.
He is thoughtful to the core, not just in terms of academia, but in terms of emotion, to an extent. He takes on what others say, and recognises it, but internally believes that because he has done so, it amounts to taking action: which as most know is not the case.
Unusually, Eli is uncomfortable around those in a higher position of authority. He has never quite been sure why, though it may stem from his own demons when it comes to creating a name for himself, and thus finds it very uneasy to face someone who had got where they were as a product of their own ambition. Despite this, Eli doesn’t see rank all the time, though it is noticeable when he does.
Backstory: Elijah Jacob Finch was born into a wealthy oligarchy, that ran the dominating conglomerate of amalgamated companies in England. He grew up comfortable, and happy, with his much older brother alongside him until the age of six. At that time, Charlie Francis Finch was 18, and was set to be the future face of the company that had integrated into United Humanity: becoming a national wing of the project.
Charlie had been selected (after volunteering) to embark on an early United Humanity expedition, one much smaller, and much less well-known than the mass effort the world would come to recognise. Because of this, Eli never got to grow up seeing his brother as the months continued on, and some became years.
The family had expected word from Charlie’s vessel as their mission got into full swing, but such communication was never made. And after two years, the procedural emergency calls to the ship were never hailed. Reluctantly, Eli’s parents had to accept their first boy was gone. Grief stricken, but bound by duty, his mother and father began to groom their remaining child for the role Charlie was supposed to play. For the most part, Eli didn’t quite consider the complexity of the teaching he received; simply focused on the loss of the brother he only knew for six years. It was not until later years, when he began to receive more responsibilities that he realised that everything he got after Charlie’s death was not meant for him: he was no better than a graverobber.
He knew his parents loved him dearly, and loved Charlie the same way, which is why he never rebelled against what he saw as the brutal fact of it all. He forced a smile and took on his duties with grace, acting as a liaison between associates of the branch his parents still held. In one such meeting, he heard of another United Humanity expedition, one much more largely funded, and popular. He immediately knew what he had to do.
After a long, emotional discussion with his parents, Eli managed to convince them that he was going because he wanted to, and that he wanted to do it for Charlie. Though the latter was true, he also went for his own reasons. Every day within the life his parents had sent out for him felt like another unintended injustice. Eli had to make the most of his life, so signed on with his scientific knowledge, and highly regarded surname to the project. Given the name of his ship a few months before departure, Eli began to wonder what life upon the Wayward Spear would be like, and whether his parents… whether Charlie would be proud of him.

All six of you are accepted I'll write up the IC thread at some point today. Just a few notes though, in particular for t00bz and Adam: You guys made military-ish characters, I just want to make sure you're aware their fighting roles will be pretty much exclusively defensive since the Spear itself isn't a military vessel. That's cool, right?

Alright! I'm bringing him back!
Name: Jonathan Zark
Age: 48
Gender: Male
Occupation: Lieutenant Commander (Fitness Advisor)
Physical Description: Zark is a fit but clearly ageing individual. His short brown hair is greying and lines have started to appear around the corners of his mouth. He is still fairly slim, fitting nicely with his decorated uniform and the black boots he wears echo down the hallways.
Personality Description: Zark is stern and often very blunt. His knowledge of military has often had him butting heads with some of the crew members, including some of the higher ranked members of the navy. It is often said that "Zark is damn good, but he is one hell of an asshole," often punishing lacking officers by either forcing them to partake in exhausting exercise routines or by forcing them to do menial maintenance work on the ship. That being said, he does respect the achievements of other officers, and does make compliments every now and then to reflect that.
Backstory: Jonathan Zark was born in a middle class family on earth before the family opted to the colony of Mombassa. There he struggled to fit in, due to his accent and his origin. Here he started to conduct questionable behaviour, getting him expelled before he is sentenced to several years in a juvenile correction facility.
It was here that he met a passing Admiral Hopkins, who was simply inspecting the colony at the time. His behaviour and determination attracted the Admiral's interests, and encouraged him to join the navy. After being released at the age of 16 that's exactly what he did, and underwent several years of personal development under Admiral Hopkins. He became a skilled peace keeper, often assisting in quelling discontent and spotting danger from several miles away.
During an operation to stop a rebellion, Admiral Hopkins was killed and left a contingent of peacekeeping officers stranded for several months. Even though the numbers dwindled, Zark personally lead the team through extreme winter conditions and dangerous rebellion forces, and once reinforcements arrived, he was immediately decorated and became an iconic figure within the unit.
From there he rose through the ranks, becoming an in-demand military commander and advisor, but he never wanted to elevate himself above lieutenant commander, since he believed his approach would be risky and dangerous. As such, he is normally passed from ship to ship as a military advisor, and as of present has spent 33 years in the navy.

I like your character in every respect except his occupation: since the Spear isn't a military vessel and won't be participating in military operations, it wouldn't make sense for it to employ a military advisor. His backstory is cool and everything so long as you find a way to lead it into him having a role more relevant to a research/exploration vessel. If you want to do that, I'd be happy to accept him once you have Also, IC thread is up. Link in the OP.
