"At last i'm done with explosions and dust in all kinds of cracks. I can think of plenty of better ways to spend my day, I bet you can too Officer Smith."
Kay commented as they stripped off in the tight grey locker room at the precinct. Christmas day was only a skeleton crew day with the extra officers who had come in to deal with the explosion leaving for home. Kay and Gemma weren't done quite yet. But like everyone else at different intervals throughout the aftermath they had trooped back to the station. A long shower sorted the blood and dust out before heading back out on the beat. It was quiet by the time they had their turn.
"I can't complain I wouldn't be up to much today if I wasn't on shift. I didn't have enough holiday saved up to travel back home to see my family. Probably have ended up moping in front of Christmas movies." Gemma shrugged her way into the warm fabric of her spare shirt.
"What would you be up to Kay?"
There was a brief flash of mischief and mirth as Kay caught her eye.
"Well now that would be spoilers. I've done some pretty crazy things in the past. I remember one time when I got my hands on a penguin in a top hat..." The mirth rippled a little bit. "Though this year i'm missing my family too. They're off on a road trip somewhere. I'd probably be thinking of them in my little flat."
"I hope you don't expect me to invite you out for a joint pity drink later." Gemma replied after a long awkward pause where they avoided each others eyes.
"Of course not Officer Smith. That would mean you admitting that you like me." Kay grinned as Gemma shook her head and rolled her eyes.

Haley had managed to stop throwing up a few hours before but an unending fatigue had overwhelmed her as she still sat hiding on her bathroom floor. The shaking had subsided too, though her cheeks were still streaked with the reddening of tears. She had met someone who knew what she was. They wanted to kill her. They had wanted to kill the monster she was. She could be forced back there. It was too much.
The shakes came back a little as she held onto the cool porcelain of her toilet. Nothing came up as she hovered over the bowl, breathing in the stale chemical smell before pushing herself back to the floor. She had acted reasonably coolly in front of him but the horror of it had hit as her door had clanged shut behind her, dust from her mutilated shirt falling onto the floorboards in long swirls. She almost hadn't made it to the bathroom in time as the first moment of panic took her.
The worst bit was a part of her felt she deserved it. That she should have stayed and let him kill her in front of all those people.
"No. I'm not just a monster. I can help people. I'll prove it." She muttered aloud the words gaining strength through anger. Anger at herself, anger at always letting peoples opinions of her shape who she was. "I'll prove it to myself. And if he comes for me I won't just go without a fight."
